Introduction

Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) is Indians second youngest port following Ennore in Chennai. The development of JNPT in 1989 was because of the dependence on an alternate interface in the Mumbai region to manage the increasing traffic. India's increasing international trade necessitated the development of additional facilities to decongest the traffic with the Mumbai Slot. With its huge back up place JNPT was believed to have got a strong prospect of the development of added facilities as per demand and was ultimately suited for long term maritime requirements. Port cargo handling facilities include pot terminals, a liquid handling terminal and a superficial water berth which can deal with break-bulk and container traffic both. The positive effect has led to an increase in world control highlighting the value of ports as a trade gateway. Regarding 95% by volume and 70% simply by value of India's foreign trade is usually carried out through its slot. India's coast line of 7517 km can be dotted with 12 Major Ports and 187 non-major ports. The Ports are under the power over the Central Government as well as the nonmajor Slots are under the respective State Governments. (KPMG, 2010)
