Shacochis' new new,  The Girl Who Shed Her Spirit, fuses his narrative flexibility and his profound understanding of multiple cultures into what Robert Olen Retainer calls hismagnum opus. JEFFREY HILLARD: So Grove Atlantic can be publishing your first new since Swimming within a Volcano in '93. How does that feel to get back together with your second book?

BOB SHACOCHIS: I how to start. What is kids of thoughts that are available?

HILLARD: You published a lot of nonfiction during the past 20 years, having a definitive non-fiction book in 1999,  The Immaculate Invasion. How did you juggle the nonfiction along with your work on the Woman Who also Lost Her Soul?

SHACOCHIS: There was no juggling. Once one forecasted ended, the other 1 began. Since I began working on this novel in 2002, I turned down a lot of the nonfiction work that was offered to me—including covering the wars in War and Afghanistan, which I suppose I would have got liked to acquire done, due to the significance of the people events. I had fashioned already been in two earlier war specific zones; so going to war has not been exactly a pioneering or amazing experience personally. I was dedicated to getting the book done and I knew I would personally never get it done if I kept running around the world. Also, household problems kept me in the home. Most of my personal non-fiction involves overseas travel and I didn't want to do that because my parents had been very ill—terminally ill—and my spouse became very sick as well. There were many other domestic responsibilities that kept me inside my fiction-writing couch.

HILLARD: How can it experience to be again with your second novel?

SHACOHIS: I can't say for sure. In some ways it's business as usual and that's great. I'm asked all the time, " Doesn't it feel wonderful to finish the novel? " And the answer to that is, " No . " It's kind of a reduction to stop a 10-year project, which is an imaginary task in the sense that it can be a work of my creativeness. The people who have I've resided with for 10 years within my imagination are actually sort of defunct. To lose all of them is rather a mournful process—it's not a alleviation. On a lot of show the other day, I used to be listening to Daniel Day-Lewis talk about his work and channelizing Lincoln for Spielberg's video. He submerged himself inside the character of Lincoln when he was working away at the movie and, when the motion picture was over, he experienced a great sense of suffering in his disconnection and detachment back into his own figure. That's the way i felt with finishing this guide. It's a perception of reduction but as well it's a feeling of long-awaited accomplishment—just concluding something.

HILLARD: At thirty four you received the Nationwide Book Honor in 1985 for Initial Work of Fiction.

SHACOCHIS: An honor that has vanished.

HILLARD: Correct, but it's still a National Book Award. The spotlight extended very quickly. David Irving was obviously a major fanatic of your work, even before the National Publication Award. The fact that was that time just like when your legend really flower, especially next award?

SHACOCHIS: It was too long ago. I don't remember. [laughs] That was how years ago? 3 decades ago? I'm certain it was grand. Doors exposed. Once Easy inside the Islands came away, I got calls from editors from all of the major magazines that I got lusted to work for as I was in journalism school in the early '70s on the University of Missouri.
