Korean Martyrs were the subjects of religious persecution against the Christian believers during the 19th century in Korea. Through the persecutions of 1839, 1846, 1866, and 1867, a hundred and three Christians in Korea gave their lives as martyrs and at least 8, 1000 adherents towards the faith had been known to include died. The martyrs included clergy, although were mainly the laity. They consecrated the rich beginnings from the Church in Korea with their blood. Most notable were Fr. Andrew Ellie of Taegon, the 1st Korean clergyman and pastor, and Paul Chong of Hasang, a lay apostle.
St . Andrew Kim Taegon was born right into a noble Korean family. He travelled to China to become a Catholic priest and he was ordained in Macao. When he went back to Korea, as the first indigenous priest, he was arrested, tortured, and eventually beheaded.
St . Paul Chong Hasang(1795-1839) was one of the lay leaders who have participated in the business of the early Korean Catholic Church. He was persecuted ahead of he could be ordained.
During the persecution period, the Korea's simply priest, Chu, Moon Mo and many visible leaders from the early Korean language Catholic Church were martyred.
