Good Morning professors and other students, what is poetry to you? Is it simply a block of words organized to mean a message? Or does it have some sort of deeper meaning? To me, poetry, especially Gwen Harwood's, is a type of connection that goes beyond time, it is a method of connecting your emotions and especially your philosophy to those of your time and to these in the future, because of this, I seriously enjoyed Gwen Harwood's poetry, as it offers granted myself the ability to begin to see the world through a different, more interesting perspective. In the literary criticism, Boundary Conditions, written by Jennifer Strauss in 1992, the lady believes that " Harwood's work characteristically illustrates tonal boundaries of sharpness and sweetness”, and stating that Gwen Harwood's most common styles " are definitely the old kinds; love, friendship, art, faith and memory”, all of which Certainly with, almost all of the themes that Strauss provides stated show up, and are clear, in all of Gwen Harwood's poems. Faith and recollection in particular helped me better appreciate and enjoy her poem, and the context the lady had written that in. Faith based motifs are generally shared within all her poems; this reflects Harwood's religious background her " dream of Jesus”, roughly explained in her article, " Lamplit Presences” written inside the 1980s, she spoke of her security within the forearms of Christ, " safe on his mild breast. ” Triste, Infelice is a perfect example of this, she speaks showing how "... the loved additional is organised for fatidico comfort, and taken... ” further given textual sincerity by the poem's own identity, as " Triste” means sad, mournful or wistful. The composition is full of ambiguous phrases, such as " I was with you in anguish. ” Within an ironic feeling, Harwood is talking about the " comfort” that can be achieved through one's faith and personal affairs. Enjambment is also employed in the poem to create a type of flow when the poem is read out loud, " As well as the heart from the prison cries/ to the soul walking above... ” even though...
