Raja Rao's first new Kanthapura (1938) is the history of a community in south India known as Kanthapura. The novel is usually narrated as a ‘sthalapurana' by a classic woman of the village, Achakka. Kanthapura is a traditional famille ridden American indian village which is away from most modern techniques for living. Dominating castes like Brahmins will be privileged for the most powerful region with the village whereas Sudras, Pariahs are marginalized. The town is considered to have guarded by a neighborhood deity referred to as Kenchamma. Even though casteist, the village has got a long nourished traditions of festivals through which all elegances interact as well as the villagers will be united.
The main character of the new Moorthy can be described as Brahmin whom discovered a half left ‘linga' through the village and installed this. A serenidad is built right now there, which later on became the centre point of the village life. Almost all ceremonies and festivals are celebrated within the temple areas.
Hari-Kathas, a traditional form of storytelling, was practiced in the village. Hari-Kathas are stories of Hari(God). One Hari-Katha man, Jayaramachar, narrated a Hari Katha based on Gandhi and his values. The narrator was caught because of the politics propaganda instilled in the story.
The novel commences its intervention when Moorthy leaves to get the city where he got acquainted with Gandhian viewpoint through pamphlets and other literatures. He adopted Gandhi in letter and spirit. This individual wore residence spun khaddar. Discarded international clothes and fought against untouchability. This switched the small town priest, a Brahmin, against him who complained to the swami who was a supporter of foreign government and Moorthy was ex-communicated. Heartbroken to hear that, his mom Narasamma passed away.
